Direct from Paris, a magnificent antique 19th century French covered

Premier French silversmith “Puiforcat”, currently owned by Hermes, in near new
condition, circa 1890s. The art of
silversmithing has long been a hallmark of French craftsmanship, embodying a
tradition of luxury, precision, and timeless elegance. Among the most revered
names in this field is Puiforcat, a silversmith that has become synonymous with
exceptional quality and artistry. Founded in the early 19th century, Puiforcat
has established itself as a leader in the creation of sterling silverware,
including their renowned vegetable servers and serving platters.
The story of Puiforcat begins in 1820 when Jean-Baptiste Fuchs established a
silversmith workshop in Paris. The Fuchs family, originally from Germany,
brought with them a rich tradition of metalworking. In 1832, Jean-Baptiste's
son, Emile Fuchs, took over the business and married into the Puiforcat family,
a name that would later become iconic in the world of silverware. Emile's son,
Jean Puiforcat, inherited the workshop in 1922 and propelled the brand to
international acclaim. Puiforcat's
reputation for quality and craftsmanship is unparalleled. Each piece is a
testament to the skill and dedication of the artisans who create them. The
creation of a single piece of Puiforcat silverware involves numerous steps, each
executed with meticulous attention to detail. The silver is first cast into the
desired shape, then carefully hammered and polished to achieve a flawless
finish. The artisans employ traditional techniques, such as hand-chasing and
engraving, to add intricate patterns and motifs. These methods require years of
training and a steady hand, as even the slightest error can mar the final
product. One of the hallmarks of
Puiforcat's craftsmanship is their commitment to innovation. While they honor
traditional techniques, they are not afraid to experiment with new forms and
materials.
Over the years, Puiforcat has received numerous awards and accolades that attest
to their excellence in silversmithing. One of the most prestigious honors came
in 1925 at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels
Modernes in Paris, where Jean Puiforcat was awarded a Grand Prix for his
innovative designs. This exhibition was a defining moment for the Art Deco
movement, and Puiforcat's success there solidified their reputation as a leader
in modern design. In addition to
this, Puiforcat has been recognized by various international organizations and
institutions. They have received multiple awards from the Société
d'Encouragement à l'Art et à l'Industrie, a French society dedicated to
promoting excellence in the arts and crafts. Their pieces have also been
exhibited in renowned museums, such as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris
and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, further cementing their status
as a cultural and artistic treasure.
Puiforcat's exceptional craftsmanship has earned them the patronage of royalty
and heads of state. One of their most notable clients was King Farouk of Egypt,
who was known for his extravagant taste and extensive collection of luxury
goods. King Farouk commissioned several pieces from Puiforcat, including
elaborate tableware and decorative objects, which were used in royal banquets
and ceremonies. In addition to King
Farouk, Puiforcat has served other members of the European aristocracy. Their
silverware has graced the tables of palaces and mansions across the continent,
from the Château de Versailles to the Buckingham Palace. This royal endorsement
not only underscores the brand's prestige but also highlights the universal
appeal of their designs, which transcend cultural and temporal boundaries.
In 1993, Puiforcat became part of the Hermès luxury group, a move that further
elevated their status in the world of high-end silverware. Hermès, known for its
commitment to quality and craftsmanship, recognized Puiforcat as a kindred
spirit and a valuable addition to their portfolio of luxury brands.
The association with Hermès has allowed Puiforcat to expand their reach
and resources while maintaining their independence and artistic integrity.
Hermès' global network and marketing expertise have introduced Puiforcat to a
new generation of discerning customers, ensuring that their legacy continues to
thrive in the 21st century. Under
the Hermès umbrella, Puiforcat has continued to innovate and push the boundaries
of silversmithing. They have collaborated with contemporary designers and
artists, creating limited-edition pieces that blend traditional techniques with
modern aesthetics. These collaborations have garnered critical acclaim and have
further solidified Puiforcat's reputation as a leader in the field.
