Description

Direct from a private mansion in Paris, a magnificent 299 pc. (service for 24) antique French sterling silver flatware set by France’s premier silversmith “Puiforcat” (currently owned by Hermes) in their much sought-after Vauban pattern.  The set is in near new condition and there are no monograms on any of the pieces.  Puiforcat is a name synonymous with unparalleled quality and craftsmanship in the world of silversmithing. Founded in 1820, the French silversmithing house has established itself as a beacon of excellence, revered for its meticulous attention to detail, innovative designs, and timeless elegance. Over the centuries, Puiforcat has garnered a reputation not only for its exquisite silverware but also for its association with royalty, prestigious awards, and a significant collaboration with the esteemed Hermès Group. One of its most notable creations is the 950-sterling silver Vauban model flatware set, which epitomizes the brand's commitment to perfection.

The hallmark of Puiforcat's success lies in its unwavering commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Each piece of Puiforcat silverware is a testament to the skill and dedication of its artisans, who meticulously handcraft every item using traditional techniques passed down through generations.  One of the distinguishing features of Puiforcat silverware is its use of 950 sterling silver, a standard that surpasses the 925-sterling silver commonly used by other silversmiths. This higher silver content not only enhances the brilliance and durability of the pieces but also underscores Puiforcat's dedication to excellence.  The craftsmanship involved in creating Puiforcat silverware is nothing short of extraordinary. Each piece is carefully designed, often drawing inspiration from historical styles and motifs. The artisans employ a combination of techniques, including repoussé, chasing, and engraving, to achieve intricate patterns and details that are both visually stunning and tactilely pleasing.

Puiforcat's reputation for excellence has earned it the patronage of numerous royal families and heads of state over the years. One of the most notable endorsements came from King Louis-Philippe of France, who appointed Puiforcat as the official silversmith to the royal court in the mid-19th century. This prestigious recognition solidified Puiforcat's status as a premier silversmithing house and opened doors to further royal commissions.  The House of Puiforcat continued to receive royal patronage well into the 20th century. In the 1930s, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor were known to be avid collectors of Puiforcat silverware, often commissioning bespoke pieces for their private collection. This association with royalty not only enhanced the brand's prestige but also reinforced its reputation for producing silverware of the highest quality.

Over the years, Puiforcat has garnered numerous awards and accolades, reflecting its enduring commitment to excellence. One of the earliest recognitions came at the Paris Universal Exposition in 1867, where Puiforcat received a gold medal for its exceptional silverware. This accolade marked the beginning of a series of prestigious awards that would follow in subsequent international exhibitions.  In 1925, Puiforcat participated in the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, where it showcased its innovative Art Deco designs. The exhibition was a resounding success, and Puiforcat's creations received widespread acclaim for their modernity and elegance. This event further cemented Puiforcat's position as a leading force in the world of decorative arts.

In 1993, Puiforcat joined forces with the Hermès Group, a partnership that has brought together two iconic names in the world of luxury goods. This collaboration has allowed Puiforcat to leverage Hermès' extensive network and resources while maintaining its independence and commitment to quality.  The association with Hermès has enabled Puiforcat to expand its reach and introduce its exceptional silverware to a global audience. Hermès' emphasis on craftsmanship and heritage aligns perfectly with Puiforcat's values, making this partnership a natural fit. Together, the two brands have continued to push the boundaries of design and innovation, creating timeless pieces that are cherished by collectors and connoisseurs alike.

One of Puiforcat's most iconic creations is the Vauban model flatware set, which epitomizes the brand's dedication to excellence. Named after the renowned French military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, the set draws inspiration from the precision and ingenuity associated with Vauban's fortifications.  The Vauban flatware set is crafted from 950 sterling silver, ensuring exceptional quality and durability. Each piece in the set is meticulously designed, with a focus on balance, proportion, and ergonomics. The handles feature elegant lines and subtle curves, providing a comfortable grip and enhancing the overall dining experience.  The design of the Vauban flatware set is a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. The clean, minimalist lines reflect contemporary aesthetics, while the intricate detailing and fine craftsmanship pay homage to classical silversmithing techniques. This combination of old and new makes the Vauban set a timeless addition to any table setting.  The creation of the Vauban flatware set involves a multi-step process that requires the expertise of skilled artisans. The silver is first melted and cast into ingots, which are then rolled and cut into the desired shapes. The pieces are then meticulously polished, engraved, and assembled, with each step requiring precision and attention to detail.

One of the distinguishing features of the Vauban flatware set is its versatility. The set includes a wide range of pieces, from traditional forks and spoons to specialized utensils such as fish knives and sauce ladles. This comprehensive selection allows for a complete and coordinated table setting, catering to a variety of dining occasions and culinary styles. The Vauban flatware set has received widespread acclaim for its exceptional quality and design. It has been featured in numerous design exhibitions and has garnered praise from critics and collectors alike. The set's timeless elegance and superior craftsmanship make it a coveted heirloom, passed down through generations as a symbol of refinement and taste.
